Structural Remediation of Strip Mall Canopy

Symptom

 

Canopy structure originally built with insufficient load bearing capacity.

 

Problem

 

Canopy pulling away from building superstructure and tilting downward.

 

Structural

Solution

 

Shored and jacked up canopy to level position. Installed steel beams and columns along entire 125 ft length of strip mall canopy. Mounted columns in steel reinforced concrete footings. Wrapped columns in brick and installed EIFS along entire length of beam line. Removed roof over canopy and replaced the ineffective framing with structurally sound framing secured to building superstructure. Installed new modified bitumen roofing.

Doubled Usable Space at a Chicago Night Club via Basement Dig-out and Pouring of a New Steel Reinforced Foundation Slab with Perimeter Retaining Walls.

Solution

Doubled space and capacity of nightclub by digging out basement and pouring 10” steel reinforced concrete slab with steel reinforced integrated retaining walls to support the existing foundation. Installed steel columns and back entrance concrete stairway with steel reinforced CMU retaining walls. The photos below, as shown from left to right, show the project progression.

Defective and Unsafe Concrete Precast Planking (used for structural floor of strip mall)

Solution

Installed steel beams and columns under areas of defective precast concrete planking used for floor in strip mall. Set columns in steel reinforced concrete footings.

Installed Emergency Shoring and Repaired Structure

Problem

 

Vehicle struck overhead garage doors and area between doors.

 

Structural Solution

 

Provided temporary emergency shoring followed by the installation of a steel column between overhead garage doors. For future protection, installed protective posts in front of the column and the other two sides of overhead doors. Set column and protective posts in steel reinforced concrete and finished center column in stucco.
